Waterproof vs weatherproof. Which one do you actually need?
A waterproof bag is built to go under water. A weatherproof bag is built to keep a laptop dry through rain on a commute. Black Ember packs are weatherproof, not waterproof. For almost everyone who walks, rides or flies with a laptop, weatherproof is the right level.
Where will the bag get wet?
Rain lands on the top and front of the pack and runs off. What matters is that the zippers and seams do not let it in. A weatherproof shell with water-repellent zippers covers a 20 to 40 minute walk in steady rain.

Are Black Ember bags waterproof?
No. Black Ember bags are weatherproof: an EmberTex™ PFAS-free shell, laser-cut and bonded Hypalon panels and YKK® AquaGuard zippers, built to keep contents dry in rain on a typical commute. They are not built to be submerged. For that, use a dry bag.
What is the difference between water-resistant, weatherproof and waterproof?
Water-resistant means the fabric sheds light rain for a short time. Weatherproof means the whole bag, shell, seams and zippers, is built to keep contents dry through a rainy commute. Waterproof means the bag can be submerged without leaking, which needs welded seams and a roll-top or waterproof zipper.
Can I bike in heavy rain with a laptop in a CITADEL?
Yes, for a normal commute. The CITADEL shell, bonded panels and AquaGuard zippers are built for rain and road spray, and the suspended laptop sleeve sits against your back, the driest part of the bag. For hours in a downpour, add a laptop sleeve inside for a second layer.
What are YKK AquaGuard zippers?
Coil zippers from YKK with a polyurethane film laminated over the teeth so water beads and runs off rather than passing between them. They are water-repellent, not submersible, and Black Ember fits them with Hypalon locking pulls.
Is EmberTex PFAS-free?
Yes. Black Ember states that EmberTex™ is completely free of PFAS chemicals. PFAS are the "forever chemicals" used in many conventional durable water-repellent finishes.
Which Black Ember bag is best for a rainy commute with a 16-inch laptop?
The CITADEL R3 25 ($285, 25L, 3.5 lb) with its suspended 16-inch sleeve, or the FORGE 30 ($325) if you also want brief and shoulder-bag carry. Both are weatherproof.
Do I need a rain cover?
Not for a typical commute. The weatherproof shell and zippers do the job a rain cover does on a standard backpack. A cover adds a layer for hours of sustained heavy rain.
